SELF REFERRAL
If a pharmacist seeks the help of the Pharmacists' Recovery Network voluntarily. he or she will work with a trained
intervenor who will help them receive a professional assessment of the problem. If the impairment is due to substance abuse, the pharmacist will be asked to agree to the recommendations of the professional and to
sign and to abide by a treatment contract. This agreement may include inpatient or outpatient treatment, attendance at support groups, regular urine screenings. as well as an agreement to keep the committee informed
of their employment and progress. (Costs will be the responsibility of the participant. but most services are covered by insurance plans.) As long as the pharmacist abides by their contract, their name will be known
only to the PRN group. All reports to the Board will refer only to a case number and anonymity will be strictly guarded. Only noncompliance will result in a name being reported to the Board of Pharmacy.
Those with psychological impairments will be referred to a mental health facility for evaluation. Other impairments will be
referred to the pharmacist's physician or to an appropriate specialist.
REFERRAL BY FAMILY, CO-WORKER OR EMPLOYER
If you are concerned about getting help for a pharmacist or pharmacy student who may be in trouble, you may talk to someone
on the PRN committee. It will be necessary for you to give your name (to avoid abuse of this program and to discourage crank calls! but your anonymity will be protected. If impairment can be substantiated, an
intervention by PRN members will be conducted and the steps mentioned above will be followed.
REFERRAL BY PHARMACY BOARD
A pharmacist may be brought before the New Mexico State Board of Pharmacy and that board may choose to refer the pharmacist
to the PRN group to monitor treatment and to offer support. In those cases, the committee will make regular reports to the Board on the pharmacist's progress.
