Each Champix tablet contains varenicline that works by stimulating the brain’s nicotinic receptors. It helps reduce the strength of the smoker’s longing to smoke and relieve withdrawal symptoms. It is used in conjunction with counseling and quit-smoking education. Clinical trials reported good results in which varenicline proved to be superior to bupropion (an antidepressant drug that is also used to relieve craving and withdrawal symptoms) and placebo.

Champix is a medicine that’s intended to be used solely by adults in combination with behavior modification and regular counseling support to help quit smoking. By stimulating nicotinic brain receptors, varenicline not only able to relieve smoker’s withdrawal symptoms, but also reduce the pleasure attained from smoking.
What is the dosage of Champix?
Before starting treatment, you should determine a date on which you will give up smoking and start taking Champix one to two weeks prior to that. This happens because varenicline needs time to act. Treatment consists of a titration pattern (gradual dose increase) that begins with 0.5 mg/day for the first three days, continued by 0.5 mg twice a day beginning from the fourth till the seventh day. After this, the treatment dose of varenicline is 1 mg two times per day for up to twelve weeks.
What are the contraindications for using Champix?
Champix should not be used by women who are pregnant. It is also not recommended to use this medicine by teenagers, since there is no information about its safety and benefits for this age group. Do not take Champix if you are allergic to any of its components or if you are using another type of nicotine replacement therapy. If you believe that you have experienced an allergic reaction to this medicine, stop taking it immediately and inform your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.
What are the adverse effects of Champix?
Generally, varenicline is very well tolerated, but just like with any other medicine, it can cause side effects too. Most common side effects caused by Champix are headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.
